Washburn Tech to Host Third Annual Signing Day

February 2, 2016

Topeka, Kan. – Washburn Tech will ink a new class of recruits at National Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day from 9:30 until 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2016. New students for the 2016-2017 school year will take part in a signing ceremony, similar to an athletic signing, in Washburn Tech’s Conference Center at 5724 S.W. Huntoon. Special guests will include Governor Sam Brownback and John Fox, director of dealer training, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

Washburn Tech’s event, now in its third year, mirrors the NCAA’s National Signing Day for athletes who commit to play sports in college. It is designed to honor students who are entering a technical field and to celebrate the dignity of work. Washburn Tech traditionally signs approximately 450 students on Signing Day.

“We believe in the importance of training good people with good skills which lead to good jobs,” said Clark Coco, dean, Washburn Tech. “As the founder of National Technical Letter of Intent Signing Day, Washburn Tech is thrilled that dozens of additional schools are joining us in what’s become a coordinated national event.”

This year, schools from Arizona, Kansas, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee and Wisconsin also are participating. Coco says this united force is telling potential students that they are wanted, places are reserved for them and technical education will prepare them for strong careers.

Area business and community leaders along with several of Washburn Tech’s corporate partners will be in attendance to show support. It offers them a chance to meet their workforce of tomorrow.

Washburn Tech offers more than 30 career programs in one of five divisions: Construction, Health Care, Human Services, Technology and Transportation. Serving both high school and adult students, Washburn Tech has the highest graduation and placement rates in the state.
