WHAT DOES A CNA OR HOME HEALTH AIDE DO?

Get your foot in the door of the fast-growing industry of health care. CNA’s and home health aides may work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, doctors’ offices, clinics or private homes. They work under the direct supervision of a licensed practical nurse or registered nurse to meet the basic needs of patients. If you are a high school junior or senior, there is no need to wait!  Start your career in health care now at Washburn Tech.

LEARNING AT WASHBURN TECH

This semester-long program is designed for high school students, preparing to become a nursing aide, nutrition assistant or looking for home health aide training. It also is open to post-secondary students. The curriculum will introduce you to basic patient care skills, medical terminology and systems of the human body.  The 13 credit hour program will prepare you to become certified as both a nursing aide and home health aide. It also serves as the foundation for more advanced health care programs at Washburn Tech such as practical nursing and surgical technology.  Upon completion, you will be eligible to take both the CNA and HHA exams from the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services. You must bring a copy of your social security card to the first day of class.

JOB AND SALARY OUTLOOK

Employment for nursing aides, orderlies and attendants will grow 18 percent between 2008 and 2018, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. That is largely attributed to the long-term care needs of an aging population. According to the Kansas Department of Labor, the average entry-level salary for a CNA in 2015 is $9.98 an hour or $20,750 annually. The average wage is $11.62 an hour or $24,170 annually. The average entry-level salary for a home health aide is $9.89 an hour or $20,562 annually. The average wage is $10.90 an hour or $22,673 annually.
