Scholarships

Many scholarship opportunities are available to Washburn Tech students for the 2017-2018 academic year. Each scholarship has specific eligibility criteria so check-out your options listed below. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Joint Economic Development Organization (JEDO) and GO Topeka Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in a high demand career program as determined by the Kansas Department of Commerce (Advance Systems Technology, Automotive Service Technology, Building Technology, Commercial and Heavy Construction, Computer Repair and Networking, Culinary Arts, Diesel Technology, Locomotive Diesel Technology, Electrical Technology, Climate and Energy Control Technologies, Practical Nursing (not pre-req courses), Machine/Tool Technology Cert A and Cert C, Surgical Technology, Welding Cert A and Cert C, EMT)
  • Shawnee County residents
  • Post-secondary students (must have a high school diploma or GED)
  • New and continuing students
    • Continuing students must have a 3.0 GPA or better, for the current academic program

Details and how to apply:

  • Complete a General Scholarship Application
  • Submit 1 recommendation form
    • Must be a professional recommendation, such as a high school teacher, a Washburn Tech instructor, or a work supervisor.  Recommendation forms from family members and friends will not be accepted
  • Award Amount
    • $250 for students enrolled in 9 to 17 credit hours
    • $500 for students enrolled 18 credit hours or more
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • If funds are available, this scholarship is automatically renewed for all subsequent semesters, within the same academic program, if the student maintains a Washburn Tech cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better

ABWA-Career Chapter Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Preference given to women attending Washburn Tech or Washburn University
  • Must be enrolled to attend Washburn Tech (minimum of 12-credit hours) or Washburn University (minimum of 6-credit hours)
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must have professional or business career goals

  • Applications are typically due in the spring

Beaman Family Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in Advanced Systems Technology, Building Technology, Cabinet/Millwork, Climate and Energy Control, Commercial and Heavy Construction, Electricity, Practical Nursing or Surgical Technology.
  • Students who have completed at least one semester in current program and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Post-secondary students (must have a high school diploma or GED)

  • Complete a General Scholarship Application
  • Submit 1 recommendation form
    • Must be a professional recommendation, such as a high school teacher, a Washburn Tech instructor, or a work supervisor.  Recommendation forms from family members and friends will not be accepted.
  • Award amount - $1000
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • Scholarship is not renewable for subsequent semesters

Bryden Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • High school students who are eligible for free/reduced lunch at their home high school
  • New and continuing students
    • Continuing students must have an overall Washburn Tech GPA of 2.50 or better

Details and how to apply:

  • Complete a Bryden Scholarship Form
  • Provide documentation from the high school regarding eligibility for free or reduced lunch
  • Award amount - $100
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • Applications for this semester are accepted throughout the semester, if funds remain available
  • Scholarship is not automatically renewable for subsequent semesters
  • Recipients who continue to meet eligibility requirements, may request a renewal of funds for subsequent semesters within the same school year by sending an email to tech-fa-info@washburn.edu
    • The email should include the student’s name, WIN, and program
    • If funds are available, renewal requests will be granted in the order they are received

Collision Education Foundation Scholarships

Who qualifies:

  • High school seniors and adults who are collision students
  • $200,000+ in awards available including tool grant for veterans

Daniel Kelley Memorial Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in Diesel Technology or Heavy Diesel Technology
    • Students enrolled in the Diesel Locomotive program are not eligible for this scholarship
  • Students who have completed at least one semester in current program and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Post-secondary students (must have a high school diploma or GED)

  • Complete General Scholarship Application
  • Submit 1 recommendation form
    • Must be a professional recommendation, such as a high school teacher, a Washburn Tech instructor, or a work supervisor.  Recommendation forms from family members and friends will not be accepted.
  • Award Amount - $500
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • Scholarship is not renewable for subsequent semesters

Drexler Scholarship (spring only)

Who qualifies:

  • Students with a high school diploma or GED
  • Must have completed at least one semester (part or full-day) at Washburn Tech
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Must provide verification of service in combat duty in a recognized conflict, combat or war zone
  • Must provide DD214 showing honorable discharge

  • Complete a General Scholarship Application 
  • Must submit 1 recommendation form; cannot be from family/friends
  • Available spring only
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • Applications are reviewed one time per semester
  • Scholarship is not renewable for subsequent semesters
  • Award amount - $500

Rita C. and Paul B. Etzel Scholarship (spring only)

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in Practical Nursing, Surgical Technology, Commercial & Heavy Construction and Diesel Technology 
  • New and continuing students
  • Preference is given to a non-traditional student with minor, dependent children

Details and how to apply:

  • Complete a General Scholarship Application
  • Submit 1 recommendation form; cannot be from family/friends
  • Available spring only
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • Scholarship is not renewable for subsequent semesters
  • Award amount - $500

William T. Goff Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in Welding – Cert C – 48 credit hour
    • Students enrolled in the Welding – Cert A program are not eligible for this scholarship
  • Students who have completed at least one semester in current program and have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better and at least a 90% attendance rate
  • High school and post-secondary students
    • High school students must submit a high school transcript with a GPA or 2.5 or higher

  • Award Amount
    • $500 – post-secondary recipient
    • $250 – high school recipient
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • Scholarship is not renewable for subsequent semesters

Horatio Alger Association Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • High school graduates or students with GED
  • Students enrolled in eligible program in Fall 2017
  • Students who exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a career or technical program at an accredited non-profit post-secondary institution in the U.S.
  • Students who demonstrate critical financial need (must be eligible to receive the Federal Pell grant as determined by completion of the FAFSA)
  • Demonstrate perseverance in overcoming adversity
  • Must be under the age of 30 and a U.S. citizen

Details and how to apply:

  • Go to website and complete/submit application
  • Award amount – up to $2,500
  • First deadline is June 15, 2017 

KBS Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in Building Technology, Cabinet and Millwork, Climate and Energy Control, Commercial & Heavy Construction or Electrical Technology
  • High school and post-secondary students
  • New and continuing students
    • Continuing students must have a 3.0 GPA or better, for the current academic program

Details and how to apply:

  • Complete a General Scholarship Application, including essay questions
  • Submit 1 recommendation form
    • Must be a professional recommendation, such as a high school teacher, a Washburn Tech instructor, or a work supervisor.  Recommendation forms from family members and friends will not be accepted.
  • Award Amount - $250
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • If funds are available, scholarship is automatically renewed for one subsequent semester for students who maintain a Washburn Tech cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better

Locomotive Diesel - NARS - Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in Locomotive Diesel Technology, taking the NARS curriculum 
  • High school and post-secondary students

  • Complete a General Scholarship Application
  • Submit 1 recommendation form
    • Must be a professional recommendation, such as a high school teacher, a Washburn Tech instructor, or a work supervisor.  Recommendation forms from family members and friends will not be accepted.
  • Award amount
    • $500 for students enrolled half day
    • $1000 for students enrolled full day
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • Scholarship is not renewable for subsequent semesters

MANA de Topeka Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Female students who are Latina (Hispanic) 
  • Must be enrolling or re-enrolling full-time in a technical college, community college or university
  • Must graduate from high school or complete a GED before attending
  • Must be a resident of Topeka and/or Shawnee County
  • Must have 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Must demonstrate leadership and community involvement

Mike Rowe "2017 Work Ethic" Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • High school seniors, high school graduates or GED equivalent who are enrolled or planning to enroll at an accredited two-year college, vocational, technical school or other approved technical institute in the U.S.
  • Enrolled or planning to enroll in an approved vocational or similar trade-related program. See list of approved programs.
  • Planning to complete a trade-related program after December 1, 2017

Phlebotomy Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in the Phlebotomy program
  • High school and post-secondary students

Details and how to apply:

  • Complete a Phlebotomy Scholarship Application
  • Award amount - up to the amount of Institutional Charges, such as tuition, technology fee and lab fee
    • Scholarship does not cover cost of textbooks or uniforms
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
    • If your scholarship packet is submitted at least four weeks prior to the beginning of the semester in which you are enrolled, you will receive your determination letter prior to the first day of the semester
  • Scholarship is not renewable for subsequent semesters

Rees Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in the HVAC program (Climate & Energy Control Technologies)
  • High school and post-secondary students

Topeka High School Class of 1952 Scholarship (fall only)

Who qualifies:

  • Students who graduated from Topeka High School with the most recent graduating class and have an official high school transcript on file at Washburn Tech
  • Students who had a final high school GPA of at least 2.5
  • New and continuing students
    • Continuing students must have a 3.0 GPA or better

  • Complete a General Scholarship Application
  • Submit 1 recommendation form
    • Must be a professional recommendation, such as a high school teacher, a Washburn Tech instructor, or a work supervisor.  Recommendation forms from family members and friends will not be accepted.
    • Must be from a high school teacher, a Washburn Tech instructor, or a work supervisor
  • Provide a birth certificate for proof of U.S. Citizenship
  • Award Amount - $500
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • Scholarship is automatically renewed for one subsequent semester for students who maintain a Washburn Tech cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Awarded only in the fall

Washburn Women's Alliance Scholarships

Who qualifies:

  • preference given to single parents who are advancing their education at Washburn University and/or Washburn Tech

  • Application deadline is typically in the spring

Washburn Tech Practical Nursing Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in the final semester of the Practical Nursing program (day or evening)
  • Students who have earned all As and Bs within the Practical Nursing progam, prerequisite course grades are not considered
  • Post-secondary students (must have a high school diploma or GED)

  • Complete a General Scholarship Application
  • Submit two recommendation forms (must be from instructors who taught the first portion of the Practical Nursing program at Washburn Tech - recommendation forms from family members and friends will not be accepted)
  • Award amount is $500
  • Submit application packet to the Washburn Tech Financial Aid Office located in the Student Services Office, only one packet per semester
  • Scholarship is not renewable for subsequent semesters

Yingling Scholarship

Who qualifies:

  • Students enrolled in Automotive Service Technician or Auto Collision
  • Students who have completed at least one semester in current program and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better
  • Post-secondary students (must have a high school diploma or GED)
